Validating a 3D Product Configurator With a Sales Pilot

A configurator becomes valuable when sales can use it with confidence, the customer can complete it and the team can learn from every submission.

The Challenge

The DriveWorks configurator could create product specifications and drawings, but it still needed a launch model. Open questions included 3D file weight, mobile responsiveness, required-field validation, platform placement, email outputs and whether the sales team would use the tool in real opportunities.

What I Did

I designed an internal pilot around actual sales behaviour. The configurator was embedded on a staging page, loaded with an initial set of platforms and opened to the sales team. Staff were asked first to submit test configurations, then use the tool when a matching live requirement appeared. I paired the release with a SmartSheet issue form, a structured web-project workflow and exportable specification logs.

How I Did It

  • 01: Reviewed the journey screen by screen and required essential inputs before progression.
  • 02: Used Google Analytics screen-size data to challenge desktop-only assumptions.
  • 03: Preserved test records so usage could be filtered by date rather than erased.
  • 04: Created a one-week learning loop between sales feedback, bug triage and the configurator developer.

The Result

The configurator moved from development artefact to an internally released sales tool with a defined testing audience, feedback route and usage record. The form was judged intuitive in internal review, while specific responsiveness and performance issues were captured before public launch. The result was a safer release and a measurable adoption pathway rather than a one-off handover.

Why It Matters

I launch digital tools as operating systems: audience, behaviour, evidence and ownership are designed alongside the interface.
